Grand Designs supports local children's hospice.

Engaging with the local community and supporting a vital cause. Opening its doors to Haven House Children’s Hospice, Grand Designs has helped to fundraise for the charity during last May’s event in London. Choosing Haven House was a natural step, since Grand Designs has supported other charities before in addition to an aspiration within Media 10, organizer of Grand Designs, to engage with the local community in Essex where it is based.

The hospice, which has supported more than 650 families since 2003, was granted access at the latest event to fundraise, in addition to receiving a flat donation. The funds will support life-limited children and their families in West Essex.

In a letter addressed to Grand Designs at Media 10, the charity states: “This total is absolutely fantastic and we are so grateful for your kind support. Quite simply without supporters like yourself, we wouldn’t be able to continue the work we do.”

Haven House offers a range of services such as its ‘Buddies’ support group. Buddies allow siblings to meet other brothers and sisters of children with life-limiting conditions and provide support to those who have experienced bereavement. The service runs from various locations, with its base in a rainbow-coloured Buddies hut situated in the grounds of the hospice.

Haven House residential and community services extend across North and North East London, West Essex and East Hertfordshire, including respite and end-of-life care. In the hospice children benefit from play activities as well as day and overnight stays. Through the Holistic Care Centre, opened in September 2014, children can access a range of therapies, including music therapy, physiotherapy and therapeutic yoga.

The charity believes families should have support when facing the difficulties of looking after a child with a life-limiting condition; therefore, all of their services are free of charge. It is a challenge since it mostly relies on donations to support its £3.6m annual costs as only around 25% of this sum comes from government funding.
